US Census Bureau

Summary File 1 (SF1)

Description: Census short-form (full-count) information (primarily race, age, tenure).

Level of geography: Available by census block.

Availability: CRI database has complete 2000 SF1 for Kent and all bordering counties, and partial 1990 STF1 data.

Summary File 2 (SF2)

Description: Census short form (full count) information, (identical to SF1) for 249 racial groups.

Level of geography: Available by tract when groups population is greater than 100 persons).

Availability: Currently available from Census Bureau. SF2 has limited use for neighborhood specific questions, but may be useful in general analysis. CRI will acquire on an as-needed basis.

Summary File 3 (SF3)

Description: Census long form (sample) information.

Level of geography: Available by block group level. CRI has created an process to estimate this information for the neighborhood association boundaries.

Availability: Likely to be released in July or August 2002. CRI plans to acquire and process the data within a few weeks of its release.

Summary File 4 (SF4)

Description: Census long form (sample) information, (identical to SF3) for 249 racial groups.

Level of geography: Available by tract when groups population is greater than 100 persons).

Availability: Likely to be released in early 2003. SF4 has limited use for neighborhood-specific questions, but may be useful in general analysis. CRI would acquire on an as-needed basis.

Public Use Micro Sample (PUMS)

Description: Five percent sample of individual census records

Level of geography: PUMA (Public Use Microsample Area), census defined areas with a minimum population of 100,000

Availability: Likely to be release mid 2003. PUMS data has no use for neighborhood-specific questions, but can be a very powerful analytical data set. CRI will acquire PUMAS at least for the MSA.

REGIS (Regional Geographic Information System)

Description: REGIS centralizes collection, storage and management of government records for most Kent County governments and agencies. Of greatest interest is parcel level data originating on the various city Assessors Offices.

Level of geography: Parcel, which can be aggregated up to neighborhood and census geography.

Availability: CRI entered into negotiation with REGIS to gain a connection to the REGIS system in exchange for assistance and facilities for training REGIS users. However, the REGIS board has prohibited any dissemination of data from REGIS pending resolution of internal issues and adoption of a enhanced access policy. In the mean time, all request for public data must go through the individual municipalities and agencies. (Who says government isn't efficient.)

City of Grand Rapids

Police Department Records

Description: Records (time, offense type, address, service area, and beat area) of crimes, and non-criminal police responses

Level of geography: Address which can be aggregated up to neighborhood and census geography. Available for 2000 & 2001. Quarterly updates.

Availability: Public data. CRI formally made a request to the GRPD in early April, 2002. Although initial reaction from their information officer was positive, approval from the chief's office is still pending.

Assessors Office Records

Description: Residential and commercial property records including owners, sales dates, sales prices, assessed values, tax delinquencies, and property characteristics.

Level of geography: Address which can be aggregated up to neighborhood and census geography.

Availability: No direct contact has been made. (Original plan was to acquire records for whole county through REGIS) A meeting with city officials is being arranged for June.

Neighborhood Improvement Department Records

Description: Building permits, housing and building code violations, nuisance complaints, demolitions.

Level of geography: Address which can be aggregated up to neighborhood and census geography.

Availability: No direct contact has been made. Records are believed to be in paper format only. Thus data input would be required.

Grand Valley State University

Annis Water Resource Institute data collection

Description: Various layers of data representing natural features and environmental hazards. Much of this data is also available from CGI (see below) but is in greater detail from AWRI.

Level of geography: geographic coordinate

Availability: CRI has obtained CD from AWRI

Johnson Center for Philanthropy Nonprofit Database

Description: local nonprofit organization dataset, includes names and type.

Level of geography: address

Availability: CRI has geocoded current addresses list (85% match)

State of Michigan

Department of Community Health Health Statistics

Description: Health data including infant mortality, nursing facility care, preventable hospitalizations, live births, mortality, communicable diseases, hospitalizations, nursing home care, Medicaid, mental health, and substance abuse.

Level of geography: Sometimes tract.

Availability: Public data, downloadable at county / city level. Some is available by tract upon request. Neighborhood information might be extracted if CH Department would allow access to data under confidentiality agreement for "research purposes."

Center for Geographic Information - Michigan Geographic Data Library

Description: Depository for state geographic data, including aerial imagery, contamination sites, land cover, geology, hydrography, land ownership and topography.

Level of geography: geographic coordinates

Availability: Public data, downloadable.

Michigan Employment Security Commission - ES202 data

Description: Unemployment insurance records of virtually all firms in the state, including establishment name, SIC code, number of employees, total quarterly wages.

Level of geography: address

Availability: Confidential. Requires confidentiality agreement. No action.

Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC)

Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA)data

Description: HMDA data is collected by financial institutions as a result of applications for home-purchase loans and home-improvement loans. (Includes amount of loan and type of loan.)

Level of geography: Tract

Availability: Public data, $50 for CD per year.

Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) data

Description: Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) data collected by financial institutions as a result of applications for business loans.

Level of geography: Tract.

Availability: County level is public and downloadable. Tract is available, but may require special agreement with FFIEC.

US Environmental Protection Agency

Description: Data on Air, Chemicals, Facility Information, Grants/Funding, Hazardous Waste, Superfund, Toxic Releases, and Water Permits, Drinking Water, Drinking Water Contaminant Occurrence, and Drinking Water Microbial and Disinfection Byproduct Information

Level of geography: Varies. Sometimes by address

Availability: Public data, downloadable through Envirofacts website. (Some data removed post 9/11.)
